When Sam reached the police station the tape from mall security was ready to roll. Sam was able to positively identify the person abducted as Lisa and also get tag numbers from both the van and her car. The police there had already run both the tag numbers and found out Lisa’s car was found abandoned at a rundown motel in a bad section of town and the van was owned by a Mike Marcelonis, a member of the D Street Defenders gang. The police chief had already put out a BOLO on the van and they hoped to hear something soon from the patrolmen on the streets. Now Sam knew what he had to do.

One of the patrolmen put him in touch with a snitch that had an “in” with the D Street Defenders. Their initiation was much more reasonable than some of the other gangs. You simply had to steal a car. Their introduction and acceptance to the group was much more stringent. Only one chance was given, and if it was a no you were usually dead. If you were accepted, you became one of the top echelons and allowed to attend all decision-making meetings. No one was just a hit man, everyone had more than one job.

Sam wore a scar on his face and messed up his hair to make him appear as if he were a hard-core gangster. He chose his clothes carefully, wearing ratty and dirty, low-hung jeans and a matching, overlarge T-shirt. He put his ankle holster on and then secured his hidden weapon. He placed his gun—all gangsters had a weapon of some sort—in his pants pocket. One more look in the mirror and he felt like he was looking at a true gangster.

He drove his car to meet the snitch, who he then followed to the “office” of the D Street Defenders.

Sam was told there was an old pool hall that had been delegated specifically to the D Street Defenders whether the owner wanted them there or not. The owner apparently had no say anymore since he found his final resting place in the nearby lake with concrete shoes. Anything they wanted they stole, and when they needed some big money they moved people around for a month or two. He knew there was big money in trafficking and it was easy pickings, kids right out of the park or their backyard and young girls walking outside the mall or home from school.

Sam listened to everything the snitch said and made a note of all the details. That’s why he chose this field. He had an excellent memory for details and knew how to use them to his benefit. He knew the girl he mentioned had to be his niece, Autumn.

“What do they do with the new people they pick up? Are they transported out of town right away?” Sam asked offhandedly of the snitch.

“They have small rooms they keep them in with taped-up mouths, hands, and feet so nobody can hear anything they don’t want them to.
